Stotras are useful in understanding the greatness of God in different forms. When one resites them he/she would get the feeling of oneness with the form of the formless God. Even though one doesn't understand the meaning completely, it should be known that the formless God listens and fulfils the wishes of the one who is reciting them. More about how they help

Stotras are useful even if one does not know their meaning- like the passwords!

It is nice to understand what we are speaking or uttering. Meaning of Stotras will help any one to keep his mind on the deity of the Stotra and the purpose of the Stotra. This may make a person always cognizant of his will and his wish leading to less emphasis on God.

There are many instances where a Stotra when repeated even without knowing the meaning had lead to welcome change in the individual and in his circumstances. Many problems of the type where no solution was in the vicinity were favourably solved by regularly performing the parayana of the Stotras like Aditya Hrudayam, Hanuman Chalisa, SundaraKanda, Kanakdhara Stotram, Lakshmi Ashtottaram, Anjaneya Ashtottaram as Stotras.

Some Mantras used for pleasing some of the Grahas have meaning wherein the Graha is not mentioned or any thing related to him is indicated. For example the Mantra used to please Sani Graha is “Samagni Ragnibhiskaraschannastapatu Sooryah, Sam Vaato Vaatvarapaa Apasritaha “ This does not contain any thing related to Sani. But this mantra is useful even to day to please the Sani Graha. Often the meaning of the mantra/Stotra is not necessarily important for getting the required effect of uttering the same.

As Sri JVRanaga Rao commented, God certainly understands the Stotra and also the purpose for which the deity is being invoked. Even though one does not explicitly tell his wish in his prayers, the invoked deity knows the purpose and does the needful.

Two instances from Srimad Ramayana are worth noting in this context:

1. In Sundara Kanda, when Lord Anjaneya couldn’t find Sita Devi in Lanka he felt disappointed. He thought he would not go back to the mainland unless he was successful in his attempt. He even decided not to eat and wanted to die in Lanka if he failed to locate Sita Devi. As is normal with any human being that one thinks of God only after one fails in his attempts, Lord Anjaneya showed us that prayer is the only method to get proper thoughts to solve our problems.

Under his disappointed condition, Lord Anjaneya prayed as follows:

Namostu Raamaaya Salakshmanaaya
Devyaicha Tasyai Janakaatmajaayai
Namostu Rudrendra Yamaanilebhyo
Namostu Chandraarka Marudganebhyah

After he performed this prayer he got a thought that he should search for Sita Devi in the Asoka Vanam. This is what we should understand as the effect of prayers. Our thinking changes and we take correct decisions leading to solutions of our problems.

2. In the battle field when Lord Rama made Ravana fall unconscious, Ravana’s charioteer took him away to a safe place. Sri Rama was seriously thinking of ways and means of killing Ravana. One should imagine the mental condition of Sri Rama on whom all the Devatas, Rishis, and Manavas had their hopes that Rama would kill Ravana giving all of them a sigh of relief from the treacherous deeds of Ravana.

Such tense situations will be occurring to us in our daily life many a time. We should learn from Sri Rama that when we are seeking intellectual help, we should pray. The solution either occurs to us directly or some one would prompt us appropriately. Maharshi Agastya went to the battle field and suggested to Sri Rama to perform Parayana of Aaditya Hrudayam three times. Sri Rama performed so and later he killed Ravana.

Children who were not getting good marks in their examinations, got first marks and top ranks as they performed Aditya Hrudayam Parayanam every day in the morning standing before the rising Sun after taking their bath. Even after lakhs of years passed by after the battle of Sri Rama with Ravana, the Aditya Hrudaya Stotra parayana is helping even though one doesn’t understand the meaning of the Slokas in the Stotra.

One may say that the Stotras and Mantras are like Passwords which we use and get access to the files even though there may not be any meaning to them! Kindly comment. nvkrao

strostra is your prayer to god. you may not know the meaning of the strostra. it is immeterial since it will be understood by the the ONE to whom it is addressed. we must not give unnecessary importance to the meaning. though knowing the meaning may be some added advantage
